In October 1994 Otto Sauter founded the International Trumpet-Academy Bremen, Germany. It was a unique education model for highly talented trumpet students from all over the world. International renowned universities like the Royal Academy of Music London, GB and the Toho Gakuen School of Music, Toyko, Japan regularly sent students to the International Trumpet Academy Bremen. Here, Otto Sauter brought together specialists from the leading Orchestras and Universities of the world and developed with them an education program corresponding to the needs of the new generation of musicians of the 21. Century. They built up a curriculum in university style, based on the positive experiences of the professors in their fields and the different educational systems of the leading universities.
During the last years, the situation for musicians has changed a lot all over the world. In a time where even orchestra positions are not save any more the education for young musicians has to adapt to new demands. As Pierre Boulez has said, we should „train Musicians to be musically and technically flexible“. The next generation needs a practical knowledge of the many different musical disciplines and a knowledge of the way the music business works.
The Idea
Furthermore, in the past a trumpet player had to travel all over the world to study under different Professors, presuming he ever had the chance to get in touch with them. All of this was very expensive. Technically ideal but less expensive is an education in only one place by various Professors, who are in leading positions world wide in their particular fields and who only teach for a limited time in the academy. So the students receive very comprehensive lessons in the different subjects, which prevents a too early specialization that would narrow their horizons.
To achieve those aimes I founded the Trumpet-Academy Bremen. My idea was an extensive programm of education, that adresses the needs for the students of the new generation in the 21st century.
The fact that the trumpet is such a comprehensive instrument, has for consequence, that no professor can teach everything, which means, you need a lot of specialists. So we designed in cooperation with the Board of Directors and the various faculty members a curriculum in the university style which is based on those Professors positiv experiences in their indivi-dual domains.
The result is a curriculum which is especially intensive. In the words of the great violinist  Joshua Heifetz: „Unfortunately playing a musical instrument is a physical act, which you must do every day with great intensity“. Therefore the students will be subjected to a very concentrated daily routine of lessons and practicing.
Because of the untiring support of the many-sided Dr. Franz Böhmert the Trumpet-Academy was established. I would like to offer him my sincere thanks. He has always worked to get kids away from the streets and to give young people a good education to create a better future.
